Captiva Island’s Intriguing History

Captiva’s history is a captivating story starting with the aggressive Calusa Indians who thrived on the natural resources of Captiva and Useppa islands for nearly 2000 years. Through a series of bloody battles, the tribe was nearly eliminated by gold hungry Spaniards. Eventually this region became a popular spot for refuge from severe weather, attracting tall-masted schooners and pirate ships. Rousing pirates used the island to repair war ravaged ships, buried secret stores of treasures beneath the island’s white sandy shores and held beautiful women as their captives. Hence the island came to be known as Captiva.

Sanibel and Captiva Island offer water enthusiasts so many exciting things to do – from deep sea fishing, boating, water skiing, cruises, snorkeling and diving and so much more. And if you don’t have your own equipment, it is never a problem.
